EXHIBIT OF EXCELLENCE

Suffolk Student Art 2008

Congratulations to the all of the students who had artwork selected for the Exhibit of Excellence. This year there were 350 works entered of which 121 were selected for the exhibition. In her Juror’s Statement Betsy DiJulio assures us that, “The art world can rest easy if this exhibition by the next generation of young artists is any indication.”

Of the award winners, Ms. DiJulio says, “of the top three, Bryan Nuckles’ (1st Place) acrylic painting is remarkable because of its unique subject with a hint of humor; Devoy Hunter’s (2nd Place) graphite self-portrait for its evocative mood; and Trisha Breslauer’s (3rd Place) acrylic for its jazzy very “now” hipness.

Honorable Mention awards were given to Raven Chadee, Sara Comer, Apryl Hughes, Katherine Lowder and Mara O’Keefe. Additionally, 10 Merit Awards were presented to Katie Adcock, Alexis Auvert, Kaity Byrum, Elizabeth Forbes, Awa Naghipour, Emilee Nystrom, Jenna Starkey, Becky Wendland, Kristen Whalen, and Heather Woody.

MIDDLE SCHOOL WORKSHOPS

Suffolk Art League will present visiting artist workshops in each of Suffolk’s Middle Schools. These are presented by area artists in a variety of media and are supported in part by a grant from the Suffolk Fine Arts Commission. With additional support from our members and funding raised at our Annual Antique Show, we are able to offer these workshops to the schools at no cost. Suffolk Art League provides both the instructors and all the necessary materials. We thank all of our instructors and the art teachers for their help in coordinating the workshops.

VMFA WORKSHOPS

The final Virginia Museum of Fine Arts visiting artist workshop for this year was held at Kings Fork High School on April 18. Kendra Wadsworth presented “Stitch Your Life”. Based on Mexican Huichol yarn paintings, participants used colored yards and pictures to tell their stories. Students from Kings Fork, Lakeland and Nansemond River High Schools and the Lindsay School at the Hampton Roads Youth Center attended.

This year we were very pleased to have received four visiting artist workshops from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Thanks to our members’ support, we are able to place one workshop at each of Suffolk’s high schools at no cost to the schools.  We appreciate the efforts of the art teachers and our volunteers for organizing the students and assisting the artists presenting the workshops.

ANTIQUE SHOW AND SALE

On February 23 & 24, SAL held our annual Antique Show and Sale at Kings Fork Middle School. With many thanks to Dixie Peachy, Chair and the Antique Show Committee, Sharon Picot, John Taylor, Lee King, and Kay Hurley, who once again put together a wonderfully successful event. We do thank them for all their hard work.

We also thank the many volunteers and supporters for their time and efforts, working in the kitchen, selling tickets, selling program advertisements, providing decorations, making desserts, helping with set-up and break-down and everything in between. We do so appreciate everyone’s efforts. The antique dealers were a delight, the food scrumptious and everyone’s support outstanding.

Funds raised from the Antique Show and Sale help us place visiting artist workshops in our area schools, provide students scholarships and supports education and exhibition programs at the Suffolk Museum.

We hope to see you next February at the 26th Antique Show and Sale.

ANNUAL BOOK DONATION

The Suffolk Art League annually donates an art related book to the Suffolk Library System. This year’s donation is ENCLOSURE  Andy Goldsworthy. Internationally renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy began “Enclosures” in the early 1990’s when he was invited to propose a project for Cumbria, a region of outstanding natural beauty in Northern England. His response was to repair or rebuild a swathe of Cumbrian sheepfolds, stone enclosures used for the gathering of sheep, reconstructing them to contain artworks with the intention that, wherever possible, the folds would still be accessible to sheep. Over 10 years more than 40 structures had been completed.

The book includes a rich collection of ephemeral work related in various ways to sheep and an intriguing section demonstrates how work in a small creek close to his home informed some of his most impressive work to date installed recently at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The impressive volume is a rich testament to Goldworthy’s lifelong interest in the land, its history, and its inhabitants.

The Suffolk Art League was pleased to have three student scholarship winners for 2006-2007.  Due to increased income from the Chip Picot Memorial Scholarship Fund, we were able to increase the amount of funding to $1500 for this year.  Receiving scholarships were Sarah Jane Cook, Chelsea Durham, and Taylor Tennyson.  Miss Cook is a 6th grader at John F. Kennedy Middle School and is taking violin lessons with her scholarship funds.  Chelsea and Taylor, both students at Kings Fork Middle School, purchased professional art materials to help them improve their visual art talents.  We wish them all great success in their pursuit of their artistic talents.
